Nick and Hana’s engagement session was one of my favorite in recent memory. They brought so much energy and joy to the day, and their love was so inspiring. I’ve known Hana since college – we both went to Texas State (Bobcats represent!) and I’ve worked with her a multitude of times on various projects. She’s a friend first and a client second. I was so excited to see their engagement announcement on Facebook a couple of months ago. I didn’t want to make any assumptions, but was hopeful that I’d be lucky enough to be their engagement photographer.
Nick and Hana are truly the perfect pair. Adventurous, hard working, and down for just about anything. I knew this would be the kind of session that would give me all the creative freedom every photographer dreams of. The energy in the air was electric. The sun was at the perfect position in the sky to begin their session, with clouds passing in intervals to create a beautiful diffused light.
We started on a bridge with a gorgeous overlook of the Houston skyline, the trees that lined the creek below were starting to shed and change their colors from summer to fall. Nick and Hana decided to wear the perfect colors to really bring out those deep orange tones. We LOVE a good neutral (we being me lol)
We continued our journey through Buffalo Bayou, bikers and people on foot gave double takes, and there were a few audible “so cute” comments from passerby’s. I have to agree, they are incredibly cute.
My eyes caught the most interesting location as we made our way around the park. A fence-lined bridge with what must’ve been thousands of locks on it, bathed in golden sunlight. We instantly made our way to it and oh. my. god. This became a core memory. We must’ve spent 30 minutes on this bridge, walking and dancing and laughing with each other. The shadows created by this lock-lined fence were exquisite. It showed that love, actually is all around (props to you if you get the movie quote).
This wasn’t even the best part, which for me was so hard to believe. Nick and Hana luckily lived pretty close by and their parking garage had an immaculate view of the Houston skyline. They changed, grabbed their pups, and we made our way up to the roof.
As soon as we walked out, the moon made its appearance. For those of you who don’t know me very well, I love the moon. I love it even more when it’s at the perfect place in the sky for my couples to share a dance under it. Amsterdam by Gregory Alan Isokav plays in my head when I see these images. Sooooo dreamy.
To end this amazing blue hour session, Nick, who is the founder and owner of Retrospect Motors, brought up a SICK vintage red corvette to end their session. The headlights came on and I had them end their session with a little bit of steam, which is usually how I like to end them. Needless to say, I’m absolutely obsessed.
The best thing about being a photographer is getting to witness love in all its forms, but this session was above and beyond. Nick and Hana have such an open heart for each other, their friends, and their community, which made their photoshoot that much more fun. This is one of those sessions that I walked away feeling closer to them as people, and so inspired as a photographer. Letting go of the outcome, letting go of control, and being present with your partner is what I always suggest when getting your engagement photos done. This leaves room for what we’re all looking for; a little bit of magic.
